Harlan Colt

Who is Harlan Colt?

There is a soft, gentle yearning, a magnetism that spikes within me as I wander about the Rocky Mountains. The song excites my soul like the string under the master musician. Not any mountain, lake, brook, trail or stream will do; it is these particular mountains, the stomping grounds of my youth, even still today.

I do not rest assured that the land has a conscious spirit, rather, I accept that it inspires me. It is like one's comfort-zone on steriods, soaring within my being. John Denver called it, "Rocky Mountain High," very well said.

I am an American Patriot and a veteran. I took an oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. Now I struggle on how to keep my oath when so many of those enemies are slamming gavels in the courthouse, sitting in the highest seats of our government, and running our police forces.

In these mountains I am predominately free from the socialist loons who have better ideas than I on how I should live my life.

I consider myself a true environmentalist, whereas most big-city/ arm-chair environmentalists would find me a heathen within their coffee-klatch-church of warm-fuzzy, unrealistic, Disneyland-view of nature and politics.

I have learned that man and nature are not separate, that man has every bit as much right to participate as any other living creature. If they are going to insist that I evolved from the same original omeba as did everything else, then I have as much right to exist and interact as any other living creature does. It is only nature at work for me to kill and eat deer, elk, and fish, to collect huckleberries, chop down a few trees for firewood and "use the restroom" in the woods as all the other creatures do.

When they can show me when in time that man evolved away from nature in such a way that he can no longer be a part of it, only giving way as an outside observer, then perhaps I might conform to their modern view of environmentalism. Until then, I am fully participating in life with all the other life forms; no standing outside and looking in!

In my mature years I have come to realize that I have something to say. I have no pretenses that I have any special wisdom to share, but I do believe we live in a world full of hypocrisy and selfishness. Surely, some of it is my own.

I tend to get passionate about certain things, and often choose my words carefully. I do care about people's feelings. I would never intentionally offend anyone, however, if you make a claim about something, I may ask you to sustanciate it. I may come across a bit aggressive, but please know, I am still your friend if you accept my friendship. Just because I tell you, you are full of it - doesn't mean I dislike you.

As I said, I dont want to go through life wrong.

Being wrong is a good thing when you can see it. Show me I am wrong. Who wants to go through life being wrong about something? It's self-destructive and stupid. Sometimes, that is going to mean I am right, and your not. Figuring it out - shouldn't make us enemies, that would be pretty stupid too. But, sometimes, we are all pretty stupid and just don't wanna admit it.

I hang my final hat on Jesus Christ. While I have been known to thump some Bible now and then, I know I am not perfect and typically accept others as they are.

So who is Harlan Colt? A gun-totin', bible-thumpin, Idaho hillbilly redneck? It's said more in jest than reality. I don't have a mullet, it is all subjective unto the beholder. Regardless, I have something to say and look forward to it. Thus, you decide.
